Kris Halsey/Rivalry Graphics

“Creating opportunity for cultural wealth”

Kris Halsey is the owner of Rivalry Graphics, LLC started in 2017. Rivalry Graphics focuses on brand identity assistance which includes logo designs, flyers, and t-shirt designs just to name a few.

One of the major visions for Rivalry Graphics, LLC is to be one of the most well known, and profitable Graphic design firms. Kris emphasizes “design firm” meaning a team of designers who collectively work together to complete design projects for other companies. Kris desires to have the chance to build a Graphic design firm that puts people of color in a position to do more than just freelance design on social media, but assist in positioning those who are in this field to be able to expand on a much larger scale.

Kris feels that by building a black owned design firm, this will open the door to hire or partner with other black designers to change the landscape of the industry. Kris believes it’s important to show that people of color want to be recognized not only for their athleticism or ability to “spit a couple bars”; but also as doctors, lawyers, photographers, etc. So to build a firm by people of color for people of color to show off their designs skills is what Kris would like to do most. Not only to impact the industry but his culture as well.

Kris’ dream project is to work with a well known company like Nike, Jordan, or any well known fortune 500 company. To create Graphics for them would be a dream come true.

Kris states”The main advice I have for others is, never allow anyone to prevent you from chasing your dreams. Especially, when it comes to things related to the arts. Be it music, fashion, graphics whatever. You can’t let anyone take away your passion. Most importantly you are your own worst enemy. You can’t allow your doubts, insecurities, nerves, or fears stop you. Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith and hope you land on solid ground. Sometimes you won’t. Sometimes failure is inevitable. But it’s up to you to keep pushing, keep getting back up and keep your focus on your dream. Nothing beats a failure but a try and no one has ever been successful without first failing. The last piece of advice I would offer is keep people in your circle that support and believe in your dream. Like really believe in it. Not just cause they know if they stick around you might hook them up, but because they believe in you and truly want what’s best for you. Surrounding yourself with people who will believe and support you just as much as you believe and support them is imperative to lasting success. You can’t always make it on your own. Sometimes you just need someone to say they have faith in you. Sometimes when you are ready to give up having (that one person is there) to keep you from calling it quits is all it takes!”

Born in 1986 to Ronald Stewart Sr. and Sandra Goston, RJ Stewart spent his earliest years in the urban community of Amityville, NY.

Shortly after birth he found himself living in a single parent home occasionally visited by his alcoholic and abusive father. His mother, Sandra would commonly have to relocate RJ and his younger siblings to a handful of states on the east coast in order to escape their abusive father. They rotated through New York, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland until they finally settled in Newport News, VA when RJ turned 15.

By this time, RJ had already developed a strong sense of hard work and independence from having to look after his younger brothers and sisters while his mother worked two jobs to take care of the family. At the age of 16 he was kicked out of the house and made the decision to attend The Charleston Job Corps Center in West Virginia. There he earned his GED and allied business certification. He departed Job Corps at the age of 17 and spent the next year homeless. At 18 he enlisted into the US Army as an Infantryman and served 10 years which included 3 combat tours to Iraq. He participated in the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn Campaigns. He also married at the age of 19 during his enlistment. 3 years later his first daughter, Amira Stewart was born.

In 2011, RJ Stewart and his wife were divorced and he was honorably discharged from the Army. At this time he had began to suffer from depression, anxiety and PTSD, alcohol consumption had peaked and once again he found himself homeless. In 2012 he was hospitalized for an intentional opioid overdose. This would be the first of three suicidal attempts by Mr. Stewart.

In 2014, RJ ventured out and opened his first business, Grey Rose Solutions. It was a small sole proprietor that specialized in web design. Though the venture failed horribly, it was enough to fascinate him with the idea of entrepreneurship. Soon he began to study the art and lifestyle of entrepreneurship while opening several other business and helping other business owners become successful in their business endeavors.

“I believe that my success comes from the adverse experiences in my life. They put me into situations that caused me to break constantly so I had to learn how to repair myself while building the new me. I learned to use this ability when it comes to running a business. I’m able to analyze broken systems in my business and repair them while building new systems and I never have to halt day to day operation to do so.” ~ RJ Stewart Inspire

Jena Bee

“Being better is what I strive to be!”

Jena B. was born on Valentine’s Day in 1994 in Mississippi. As a child , her nickname was “Ellie May” which was based off the character, Ellie May Clampett, from the popular show from 1962, the Beverly Hillbillies . If unfamiliar with the show and this character, Ellie May loved beauty, had the soul of a tomboy and a passion for animals. Jena lived up to her childhood name, as she began to draw animal portraits, cartoons, and even self portraits.

Jena developed a respect for art and that passion transitioned to the art of beauty. When Jena would watch her older sister doing her makeup in the mirror; Jena was always in awe. She traded her art brushes for makeup brushes and this is where she found her niche. Jena became inspired to learn the art of makeup and perfect her new found passion .

Jena soon realized, knowledge is pointless if you don’t share it. With the world of Instagram and now TikTok, she wanted to utilize these social media platforms to share her knowledge with those who share the same passion as her.

Jena is motivated by achieving her set goals to fulfill her life dreams. Jena does not want to live a life of regrets and “what ifs”. Jena understands that it takes effort to make your dreams a reality. Jena has set goals for herself and she works toward achieving them every day. With the power of prayer, and manifestation of her goals, and God in the forefront, she knows she will reach her dreams.
